On September 20, the WNBA regular season concluded with a match between the Atlanta Dream and the New York Liberty at the Dream’s home court.
This game was not only crucial for the Dream as they sought victory to secure a playoff spot, but it also presented an opportunity for veteran player Charles to claim the titles of WNBA’s all-time rebounding leader and double-double queen. Prior to the game, Charles was just two rebounds shy of overtaking Fowles, who held the record with 4006 rebounds. Charles did not keep her fans waiting long, quickly securing three rebounds and thus becoming the WNBA’s all-time rebounding leader. Every subsequent rebound she grabs will now set a new record.
In addition to claiming the rebounding title, Charles also achieved a double-double early in the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. This marked her 194th career double-double, surpassing Fowles’ 193, and earning her the title of all-time double-double queen. Achieving two historic milestones in one game, Charles received a lot of applause from fans.
