At 7:00 AM on October 9th, the NBA preseason will continue with the Cavaliers hosting the Bulls.
The Cavaliers finished fourth in the Eastern Conference last season and eliminated the Magic in the first round of the playoffs, but were knocked out by the Celtics in the semifinals. In the new season, the Cavaliers have changed their head coach, with Bickerstaff stepping down and Atkinson taking over. During the off-season, they renewed contracts with three key players—Mitchell, Allen, and Mobley—and drafted Jalen Tyson as the 20th pick in the draft. The team’s overall lineup has not changed much, so it remains to be seen how new coach Atkinson will transform the team.
On paper, the Cavaliers’ lineup looks very good, with young Mobley and Allen forming a strong frontcourt duo capable of both offense and defense. In the backcourt, there are All-Star guards Mitchell and Garland, along with LeVert, Strus, Niang, Wade, Okoro, and others. There are no obvious weaknesses, and the team is also strong defensively, ranking high in multiple defensive statistics last season.
The Bulls ranked ninth last season but failed to advance through the play-in tournament and ultimately missed the playoffs. In the new season, the Bulls’ roster has undergone significant changes. The team renewed Patrick Williams’ contract, but DeRozan, Caruso, Drummond, and Javonte Green all left. DeRozan was the team’s top scorer, and they brought in Giddey, Jalen Smith, and Duarte, while drafting Buzzelis as the 11th pick in the draft. He performed well in the previous summer league.
LaVine only played 25 games last season due to injury, and the Bulls failed to trade him during the off-season. He will remain with the Bulls in the new season. Last season, players like Coby White, Dosunmu, and Pawei showed notable improvement, especially Coby White, who averaged 19.1 points and will be a key player for the Bulls in the new season. With Vucevic, Giddey, and Ball expected to return, the Bulls’ roster has competitiveness in the East, with making the playoffs being their goal.
This is the first preseason game for both teams. Giddey and Ball’s participation for the Bulls is questionable, while the Cavaliers only have Bates unavailable. Both teams’ rosters are relatively complete, and it remains to be seen which team can secure a winning start.
