On October 1st, during the media day for the new season, Kevin Durant stated that he has not yet considered the issue of a contract extension.
“I still have two years on my contract,” Durant told reporters. “Right now, I’m focused on being the best I can be every day. We’ll talk about those things when the time is right.” Durant’s salary for the 2024-25 season will be $51.1 million, and for the 2025-26 season, it will reach $54.7 million, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026. Currently, Durant is eligible to sign a one-year contract extension worth $59.7 million, which would keep him with the team through the 2026-27 season.
Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein confirmed during Durant’s participation in the Paris Olympics that the team management is discussing a contract extension with Durant: “I talk frequently with Durant’s agent Rich Kleiman, not just about the extension but also about everything else that’s going on.” Team owner Matt Ishbia stated, “Durant likes it here, and we like Kevin… We won’t discuss the extension publicly.”
Since being traded to the Phoenix Suns from the Brooklyn Nets in February 2023, Durant remains one of the most efficient scorers in the NBA. In 75 starts last season, he averaged 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists, shooting 52.3% from the field, 41.3% from three-point range, and 85.6% from the free-throw line.
In the new season, the Suns will aim to bounce back from their disappointing first-round sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves last season. This will also be the second season with Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal playing together.
