On October 8, news came that NBA legend Charles Barkley believes the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers, two teams hoping to return to the NBA Finals, are unlikely to go far in the new season. In a recent interview with “The Jim Jackson Show,” Barkley predicted that the Lakers and the Warriors would at best secure playoff spots.
"The Warriors and the Lakers are terrible… Neither of these teams is good," said Barkley. "Some media seem to think the Lakers and the Warriors are contenders, but they don’t have the strength for it. They are at best playoff contender teams. It’s true that people are optimistic about LeBron [James]’s team because they like him, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but the Lakers and the Warriors are not contenders."
Last season, the Lakers and the Warriors finished 8th and 10th in the Western Conference respectively, with the latter failing to advance to the playoffs, while the Lakers lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Denver Nuggets.
Due to the influence of Stephen Curry and James, many still view the Warriors and the Lakers as championship contenders regardless of their performance last season. However, it is clear that Barkley does not believe in either team’s contender status.
