Today, it was reported by various media outlets that Dikembe Mutombo has passed away at the age of 58.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement mourning Mutombo,
“Dikembe Mutombo’s significance transcends life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot-blockers and defensive players in NBA history. Off the court, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to helping others.
No one was more fitting to serve as the NBA’s first Global Ambassador than Dikembe. He was a humanitarian at heart. He loved the game of basketball and the positive impact he had on communities, especially in his home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo and throughout the African continent. I had the privilege of traveling the world with Dikembe and witnessed firsthand how his generosity and compassion inspired people. Over the years, at various NBA events, he was always approachable, and his infectious smile, deep voice, and signature finger wag endeared him to fans of every generation.
Dikembe’s indomitable spirit inspired those he helped throughout his extraordinary life. His immense heart touched many, including myself, and I will deeply miss him. On behalf of the entire NBA family, I extend our deepest condolences to Dikembe’s wife Rose and their children, and to his many friends. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all his friends.
He loved this world, and this world loved him.”
