Gong Luming: Physical Testing Exists Abroad Too & These Are Basic Requirements for Basketball Players; Veteran Zhou Peng Passed All Tests in One Go

On September 13, Gong Luming, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), responded to the recent heated discussion on physical testing during an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency.

Gong Luming said, “The reintroduction of physical testing this time is very good. This is not about setting barriers for athletes; there will certainly be opportunities for retesting for those who did not pass. As long as you want to play and maintain your training, you can pass. An athlete like Zhou Peng, who is a veteran, passed all tests in one go. We cannot let individual failures discourage us or lead us to believe that there is something wrong with the tests. It’s not that the tests are flawed, but rather that some athletes have issues. The items tested are all basic, and the standards are not high. There are no shortcuts in competitive sports; one must give their all and be willing to endure hardship. To improve, one needs to be prepared to endure great hardship.”

“If an athlete lacks in technique, physical fitness, mental awareness, and fighting spirit, they are only heading for failure.”

Additionally, Gong Luming mentioned that abroad, each club has its own testing methods, which are basic requirements for professional athletes. In the future, if every club realizes the importance of this and establishes its own testing system, the CBA would not need to handle this matter.
