Today, according to a report by Shams, NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo has passed away due to an untreatable brain cancer at the age of 58.
Dikembe Mutombo was born on June 25, 1966, in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was selected as the 4th pick in the first round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets.
During his career, he won the Best Defensive Player award four times (tied for the most in history), made the Second Team All-NBA once, the Third Team All-NBA twice, the First Team All-Defensive three times, the Second Team All-Defensive three times, was selected to the All-Star team eight times, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.
He is best known to Chinese fans for joining the Houston Rockets in the 2004-05 season as Yao Ming’s backup center, where fans affectionately called him “Uncle Mutombo,” and his finger wagging celebration became an eternal classic.
