Today, former NBA All-Star Dwight Howard appeared on a podcast to discuss salary management during his career, delving into how NBA players use their salaries and how much goes to taxes.
The host asked a particularly pointed question: “What’s the largest amount of money that was ever stolen from you?”
“Seven million dollars!” Howard replied.
“At the time, I was trying to buy the WNBA team, the Atlanta Dream, because I have two daughters who play basketball, and I wanted to pave the way for them so they could play for the Dream in the future. However, the NBA said active players can’t own a team, but I could build a team around it with me as the face. I spoke with the general manager and owner of the Dream. I really felt like it could become my team. I even called my mom and told her I could give out a lot of Dream merchandise because I would be the owner. I gave this group money, but I hardly got any response. Conversations with my agent became less frequent. He kept telling me, ‘They’ll call you back,’ until eventually, I couldn’t reach him. I thought he was lying; what were they doing? These people are very cunning, all trying to deceive me. They had the same motive, which was to take money from me. At that moment, I just wanted to find him and beat him up.”
In March 2023, Howard’s former agent was sent to prison. Court documents revealed that the agent used Howard’s personal assets for his own investments.
Throughout his career, Howard earned a total of $240 million and is currently engaged in various investments.
