On September 28, Shen Zijie shared his views on the frontcourt competition within Beikong and the team’s cohesion in an interview. Below is the transcript of the conversation:
Reporter: How do you feel about your integration with the team?
Shen Zijie: Actually, the domestic players have integrated quite well. We can see from the preseason games that we are quite in sync when it comes to defense and tactical movements. However, the foreign players just arrived these past two days, so we need to start integrating all over again, and establish new tactics and personnel arrangements with the foreign players. Essentially, everything is starting anew.
Reporter: You played against Beikong in the playoffs last season and are thus quite familiar with this team. In what way do you think you can contribute to the team?
Shen Zijie: Through interior defense, perhaps Beikong’s performance was affected by the situation with their foreign players last year. Since I’ve joined the team, I hope to help Beikong improve more on the defensive end through my own defensive skills, including switching defenses for perimeter players, and help Beikong achieve better results overall.
Reporter: There are many excellent players in the frontcourt of Beikong, including the foreign players whom you know well. What do you think about the competition at the frontcourt position?
Shen Zijie: This is not like before where, in other teams, a substitute might only be needed to hold down a position for ten or five minutes to give others a breather. Now that I’m with Beikong, everyone at the center position is capable of playing. Therefore, with the addition of the foreign players, the playing time at the center position will definitely be split evenly, and whoever performs better (will get more playing time). Everyone is capable and is a very high-level player in the CBA. Naturally, whoever performs better will play. I am also prepared to prioritize form, and adjust based on the opposing lineup.
