On June 15, it was announced that the Miami Heat and Washington Wizards will face off in Mexico City on November 2 during the upcoming NBA season. This marks the league’s 33rd game in Mexico since 1992, making it the most games played in any country outside of the United States or Canada. The match coincides with Mexico’s annual “Day of the Dead” (Dia de los Muertos), featuring a specially themed basketball court and fan activities.
This will be the Heat’s third appearance in Mexico, while the Wizards will be playing their fourth game there. Last November, the Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks clashed in Mexico City.
Raul Zarraga, NBA’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Mexico, commented, “The Heat and Wizards playing in Mexico City during ‘Dia de los Muertos’ next season will be another special milestone in the NBA’s long history in Mexico.”
Earlier this week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver suggested that Mexico City could be in consideration for future expansion of the league.
