Aces vs. Storm Preview: Gray Set to Return for Star-Studded Clash as Aces Aim for Revenge at Home

On June 20th at 10 AM, the WNBA regular season will feature a marquee matchup as the Las Vegas Aces host the Seattle Storm. Both teams boast impressive rosters, with the Aces’ star point guard Chelsea Gray potentially returning from injury, adding fuel to their quest for redemption after a previous home loss to the Storm.

The Aces, reigning champions, have been affected by Gray’s absence, currently holding a 6-6 record, tied for seventh in the league. Their loss count has already matched last season’s total, having lost four of their last five games, raising concerns about their form. Despite averaging an impressive 86.8 points per game, tops in the league, their defense allows 85.7 points, ranking fourth from bottom.

Gray’s potential return is a major boost, as she has been removed from the injury report. Last season, she averaged 15.3 points, 7.3 assists, and 1.4 steals, orchestrating the team’s offense effectively. Her presence would significantly enhance the Aces’ performance on both ends of the court.

A’ja Wilson continues to dominate, leading the league in scoring (28 points) and rebounding (11.5), while ranking second in blocks (2.5). Kelsey Plum averages 18.8 points and 4.7 assists, but her efficiency is middling with a field goal percentage of 37% and a three-point percentage of 33%. Jackie Young contributes 17.8 points, 6.4 assists, and 5 rebounds. The Aces’ bench is relatively inconsistent, with only Kayla McBride and Dearica Hamby providing stability.

The Storm, this season, bolstered their roster with the additions of Breanna Stewart and Skylar Diggins-Smith, forming a Big Three alongside Jewell Loyd. With a 9-5 record, they sit fourth in the league. The Storm are well-balanced, scoring 83.1 points per game (fifth in the league) and conceding 78.7 (fourth). Stewart averages 19.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, while Stewart adds 17.8 points and 7.8 rebounds, and Diggins-Smith chips in with 15.3 points and 5.9 assists. Mercedes Russell and Ezi Magbegor, averaging 13 points and 9.4 rebounds with 2.8 blocks respectively, contribute to a formidable quartet. The bench, featuring Epiphanny Prince, Sami Whitcomb, and Jordin Canada, also brings depth.

In their previous meeting, the Storm defeated the Aces 78-65, with the 65 points being the Aces’ lowest output this season. Wilson was the lone bright spot for the Aces, while Loyd scored 25 points and Diggins-Smith added 21 for the Storm. As they meet again, the Aces will be targeting revenge.
