On July 29, new developments emerged in the trade talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Jerami Grant.
However, according to renowned sports journalist Jovan Buha, regardless of how the trade ultimately materializes, D’Angelo Russell is unlikely to be sent to the Blazers.
Earlier, Jovan Buha said on his podcast: “I’m hearing that the Blazers don’t want Russell because they have too many guards on their roster. So, Russell really doesn’t make sense for them.”
“In any trade scenario, what the Blazers want most are two first-round picks.” Based on this, if the Lakers and Blazers were to engage in a three-team trade, Russell might be part of it. However, if the trade only involves the two teams, Russell will likely remain with the Lakers.
Sports journalist Jake Weinbach proposed a potential trade:
Lakers receive: Grant
Trail Blazers receive: Rui Hachimura, Vincent, Reddish, 2029 first-round pick
According to Jovan Buha, given that Grant is a forward, keeping Russell may be more beneficial for the Lakers than losing a key guard without acquiring another starter-level guard.
In the 2023-24 season, Russell averaged 18.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game, shooting 45.6% from the field and 41.5% from three-point range.
