June 21 update: It’s being reported that the Chicago Bulls are stepping up efforts to trade Zach LaVine.
According to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas has “floated as many as 15 trade ideas” involving guard Zach LaVine. The Bulls have already engaged in discussions with the Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic, and Philadelphia 76ers regarding a potential LaVine deal.
Addressing a fan’s question about the two-time All-Star’s future, Johnson stated that the relationship between the Bulls and LaVine is “one that seems destined for a breakup,” with both sides increasingly desiring change. As a result, it’s been reported that Chicago’s asking price for LaVine has “plummeted,” although the impact on facilitating a trade remains to be seen.
Last September, Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer suggested there wasn’t much of a market for LaVine. This was followed by season-ending foot surgery in February, which further diminished his trade value. Furthermore, assuming he exercises his player option for the 2026-27 season, LaVine would be owed $138 million over the next three seasons.
In his seven seasons with the Bulls, LaVine has averaged 24.2 points on 47.1% shooting, including 38.3% from beyond the arc. However, he’s only played more than 70 games in one season since 2015-16.
Throughout LaVine’s career, he’s often been unfairly criticized, and unfortunately, those critiques seem justified this year. If the Bulls are willing to offload LaVine primarily for salary-cap relief without making meaningful roster improvements in the short term, they might find a suitor. Nevertheless, other teams are well aware of Chicago’s urgency to move LaVine, per recent reports.
