Celtics Confirm Horford’s Return for Next Season: ‘He and His Family Love Everything About Boston’

Celtics Confirm Horford's Return for Next Season: 'He and His Family Love Everything About Boston'

On June 19, it was announced that Al Horford has no plans to retire after securing his first NBA championship.

Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck confirmed that Horford will be back for his 18th NBA season.

“Horford is coming back next year,” said Wyc Grousbeck during a show. “That’s what I’ve heard. Awkwardly, we beat his team in ’08. So, we were part of his ‘no ring’ and now he’s come home. He and his family love it here, and we’re thrilled to have him.”

The 38-year-old Horford, who turned 38 earlier this month, is set to earn $9.5 million next season. In the previous campaign, he averaged 8.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, primarily as a bench player – a first in his career. He also logged a career-low 26.8 minutes per game, stepping up when Kristaps Porzingis sacrificed his starting spot, especially after Porzingis went down in the first-round series against the Miami Heat.

Horford’s return to the lineup helped the Celtics secure their first title since 2008.

Heading into next season, Boston is still considered a favorite to defend its title. With no major free agents from the Celtics roster this summer, Wyc Grousbeck appears willing to keep spending below the luxury tax apron for the 2024-25 season. No NBA team has won consecutive championships since the Miami Heat did so in 2012 and 2013.
