Today, according to a report by The Athletic (TA), Booker watched the men’s 100-meter dash live and witnessed American sprinter Lyles’ thrilling gold medal win.
Booker commented, “That was crazy, great result for the US, congratulations to him!”
Previously, in an interview, Lyles openly criticized the NBA, stating,
“I saw NBA championship hats that say world champions, what world champions? America? Come on. I love America, but America isn’t the whole world. Our champions are world champions; we have athletes from almost every country competing here, proudly displaying their national flags on their chests. There are no national flags in the NBA!”
However, Booker clearly disagrees with these remarks,
“I still disagree. I believe the best basketball players in the world play in the NBA. This is a genuine opinion coming from an Olympic gold medalist (referring to himself). He thinks winning an NBA championship is more difficult.”
Booker won the men’s basketball gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 representing the United States. However, in the recently concluded NBA Finals, his team, the Suns, lost the championship after leading 2-0 against the Bucks.
Booker also mentioned,
“His comments are out there. I think they were taken out of context. This issue has weighed on him, and since then, he’s gained a large following. But he handled it well, so congratulations to him!”
This matter clearly represents a clash between individual and team sports ideologies. Which side do you support? Please share your thoughts in the comment section.
