According to previous reports, the Celtics announced after winning the championship last season that the majority shareholders led by owner Wyc Grousbeck plan to sell the team.
Today, according to ESPN’s trio of reporters (Bontemps, Pelton, Windhorst), there are indications that the final sale price of the Celtics could set a record for the highest in NBA history.
The previous record was set by the Phoenix Suns, which were purchased by owner Mat Ishbia for $4 billion. Last year, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban also sold a significant portion of the Mavericks for approximately $3.5 billion.
Currently, the NBA league has expansion plans, but these have been delayed due to the Celtics’ sale; industry insiders estimate it will be around the 2027-28 season.
