In the early hours of July 20th, in preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics, the French and Canadian national basketball teams will face off in a warm-up match.
Currently, Canada is ranked 7th in the world, while France is 9th. In the FIBA Olympic power rankings previously released, France was listed at 3rd, and Canada at 5th.
The Paris Olympics men’s basketball groups have Canada in Group A with Australia, Greece, and Spain, while France is in Group B alongside Germany, Japan, and Brazil. Both teams have already announced their 12-man Olympic rosters, with 10 of Canada’s players currently playing in the NBA, including Alexander, Dillon Brooks, Murray, and Boucher.
France also boasts numerous NBA players, featuring the formidable frontcourt duo of Gobert and Wembanyama, who provide both offense and defense, height and rim protection, striking fear into opponents. Fournier, Batum, Ntilikina, and De Colo are also included in the roster.
Canada recently played a warm-up game against Team USA, ultimately losing 72-86. In that game, Barrett scored 12 points, while Alexander and Dillon Brooks each contributed 10 points.
France has played four recent warm-up games, winning the first two but losing the last two. They defeated Turkey and Germany initially, but then lost consecutive games to Germany and Serbia. In their most recent game, France lost 67-79 to Serbia. Wembanyama had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Yabusele scored 12 points, Ntilikina had 9 points, and Fournier added 8 points.
Both France and Canada possess tremendous strength, and their rosters showcase distinct characteristics. Canada has strong perimeter scorers like Alexander and Murray, whereas France features towering talents such as Wembanyama and Gobert. This match can be described as a clash between agility and aerial dominance, and the team that best executes its style will likely have the advantage.
