On August 4, in the men’s basketball group stage of the Paris Olympics, Puerto Rico lost 83-104 to Team USA, suffering their third consecutive defeat in the group.
Puerto Rico had already been confirmed out of contention after their first two games, including a crushing 41-point loss to Serbia in their previous match. In this game, Puerto Rico started strong with good offensive play, both inside and outside, taking an early lead. They even led by four points at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hold on in the second quarter as Edwards and Durant scored repeatedly, resulting in a 23-point deficit for the quarter. They were then unable to recover and eventually suffered another 21-point defeat.
Thus, Puerto Rico finished the group stage with three straight losses, losing a total of 73 points, which is quite disappointing. In terms of strength, they were indeed the weakest team in the group, but losing by such large margins is still somewhat unsightly.
The only NBA player on the team, Alvarado, did his best, playing 22 minutes against Team USA, going 7-for-13 from the field for 18 points and 3 assists. Apart from him, only two other players scored in double digits: Romero with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Ford with 10 points. Waters, who played in the CBA last season, went 3-for-9 for 8 points.
