Goto Makiki Scores Big, but Japanese Women’s Basketball Team Still Suffers Heavy Loss

July 30th, in the women’s basketball group stage of the Paris Olympics, the Japanese women’s basketball team lost to the American women’s basketball team with a score of 76-102.

The Japanese women’s basketball team started off well, despite being at an absolute disadvantage in the paint, they were able to keep up with the score by relying on three-point shots and did not let the U.S. widen the gap too much, trailing by only 11 points at halftime. However, in the second half, as their three-point shooting cooled down, combined with their disadvantage in the paint, the gap gradually widened, and the game lost its suspense early, ultimately ending in a 26-point defeat.

The Japanese women’s basketball team persisted with their small, fast, and agile style of play, taking three-point shots whenever opportunities arose, and this was their only chance to make a bold move. They hit nine three-pointers in the first half to stay close in the scoring, but failed to maintain that momentum in the second half. However, Goto Makiki off the bench had an outstanding performance, going 10 for 11 from the field, including 2 for 3 from three-point range, to lead the team with 24 points, a commendable performance indeed. Additionally, the team’s core player, Ayumi Yamamoto, hit five three-pointers, scoring 17 points and adding five assists.
