On August 8, recently retired NBA player Hayward discussed the challenges of being a white player in the NBA during a recent interview.
Hayward said, “White players on the court tend to be targeted for single coverage. Although I tried to change the stereotype that white players can’t defend when I was on the court, people still held this perception.”
Hayward recalled an instance during a preseason game against the Lakers where, after entering the game, Metta World Peace shouted at Kobe for the ball, saying, “Give me the ball! Justin Bieber is guarding me!”
