At 10:00 AM on October 25, the NBA regular season continues with the Sacramento Kings hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Kings finished ninth in the Western Conference last season, ultimately falling short in the play-in tournament. During the offseason, the Kings made minimal moves, re-signing Monk, trading away Barnes, and acquiring former All-Star DeMar DeRozan, who, despite being 35 years old, remains in excellent form. Additionally, the Kings signed McLaughlin. On paper, the combination of Fox, Sabonis, and DeRozan looks quite promising.
In the preseason, the Kings performed poorly, losing all five games, including two losses to the Warriors, as well as defeats against the Jazz, Clippers, and Trail Blazers. Although the preseason record is not crucial, it did somewhat dampen team morale, indicating that the team’s chemistry is not yet at its best. However, the new addition of DeRozan has been a bright spot, as he has shown very good form.
The Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals last season, sweeping the Suns in the first round and eliminating the Nuggets in the semifinals, both memorable achievements. However, the Timberwolves underwent significant changes during the offseason, with top draft pick Karl-Anthony Towns moving to the Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle and D’Angelo Russell. Li Kai’er (Karl-Anthony Towns), McLaughlin, and Monte Morris also left the team, while veteran Joe Ingles was signed as a replacement. Additionally, the Timberwolves drafted Dillion Hunter with the 8th pick and Shannon Sharpe with the 27th pick.
From their opening regular-season game, it is clear that the Timberwolves are still in the process of integrating their new lineup. In their first game, they lost 103-110 to the Lakers on the road, suffering an opening loss. Anthony Edwards scored 27 points and 6 rebounds, but he shot only 10 for 25. The performances of new additions Randle and Russell were underwhelming, and the Timberwolves’ interior defense was dominated by Anthony Davis, who recorded 36 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. The team will need time to adjust without Towns.
Both teams have relatively complete rosters with no major players missing. The Kings, playing at home, are eager to start the season with a win to shake off the frustration of their five-game preseason losing streak. The Timberwolves certainly do not want to begin the new season with consecutive losses. This game promises to be a hard-fought battle, and the level of competition is sure to be high.
