On October 23, the 2024-25 NBA regular season kicks off with the Western Conference opener featuring a highly anticipated matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Lakers managed to secure the eighth seed in the regular season last year and advanced from the play-in tournament, but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs after losing 1-4 to the Denver Nuggets. The biggest change for the Lakers during the offseason was the replacement of the much-criticized Frank Vogel with new head coach JJ Redick. However, it remains to be seen whether Redick can effectively handle the pressure of leading the Lakers.
The Lakers made minimal changes to their roster, with LeBron James re-signing and key players like D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, and Jarred Vanderbilt returning. Only Donte DiVincenzo and Spencer Dinwiddie moved on to other teams. The arrival of two rookies, Knecht and Bronny James, has garnered significant attention, especially the legendary story of LeBron and Bronny playing together in Los Angeles.
The Timberwolves, in an effort to cut costs, traded Karl-Anthony Towns to New York during the offseason. Prior to that, Li Kai’er (Karl-Anthony Towns), McLaughlin, and Morris had already left Minnesota. The additions of Julius Randle, D’Angelo DiVincenzo, and Joe Ingles have kept the Timberwolves competitive, particularly with DiVincenzo adding depth to the bench. Rookie Dillinger also showed promise during the preseason.
With Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves’ defensive performance is expected to remain solid. Randle is also known for his defensive efforts, and the addition of veteran Ingles will bring more tactical discipline to the team. Naz Reid’s offensive talents may see further development following Towns’ departure, and most importantly, Anthony Edwards can now officially become the face of the franchise.
For the Lakers, Anthony Davis has shown good form with his three-point shooting during the preseason. Redick’s decision to move Davis back to the power forward position, where he feels more comfortable, could help unlock his full potential. Rookie Knecht has demonstrated solid immediate impact and is likely to secure a spot in the rotation this season.
In terms of injuries, the Timberwolves are fully healthy with no players listed as out. The Lakers, however, will be without Jarred Vanderbilt, Christian Wood, and Kherro Davis due to injuries.
Despite playing at home, the Lakers seem to be slightly inferior in overall strength compared to the Timberwolves, who are now led by Anthony Edwards. The gap between the two teams mainly lies in the depth of their bench, and there are still questions about Redick’s coaching abilities. Beyond the outcome of the game, the highlight will be whether LeBron and Bronny James can play together on the court. According to Redick, Bronny has not yet fully convinced the team with his individual skills, so the timing of their father-son tandem may depend on how the game unfolds.
