The Los Angeles Lakers successfully signed LeBron James this summer, but so far, they have not made any significant acquisitions in free agency. In fact, statistics show that they are one of only three teams in the league that have not made any moves in the free agent market.
Some industry insiders have therefore concluded that the Lakers are no longer focused on contending for a championship, and that the championship window for the LeBron-Davis duo has closed. However, what LeBron James and Anthony Davis have accomplished while playing for Team USA this summer should be enough to make their NBA team proud. The U.S. men’s basketball team just finished five exhibition games with a perfect 5-0 record, and it is unlikely that they would have achieved this without James and Davis.
Earlier, former NBA guard Austin Rivers commented that the outstanding performances of James and Davis have made him seriously consider the possibility of the Lakers winning a championship in the future. He said, “I watched Team USA play, and I know who the two best and most impactful players on the team are. So far, the two best players are two Lakers players: LeBron James and Anthony Davis, right?”
“Over the past year, all I heard was how the door to win a championship in Los Angeles for LeBron was closing. The more I watch, the less I agree with that statement. When you watch Team USA play and realize that the two most dynamic players so far are two Lakers players, you realize they aren’t behind in the race for an NBA title. Considering they are the best players on the best team in the world, the Lakers’ championship window is definitely not closed.”
In the five exhibition games for Team USA, James averaged 14.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, shooting 60.9% from the field and 46.2% from three-point range. Davis averaged 11.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game during the Team USA exhibition matches.
