Lynx vs. Mystics Preview: Collier’s Status Adds Uncertainty as Lynx Seek End to Losing Streak

Lynx vs. Mystics Preview: Collier's Status Adds Uncertainty as Lynx Seek End to Losing Streak

On the morning of July 7, the WNBA regular season continues with the Minnesota Lynx hosting the Washington Mystics.

The Lynx have been inconsistent lately, suffering a two-game losing streak, and have dropped three of their last four matches after winning the Commissioner’s Cup. However, they’ve had an impressive overall season with a 14-6 record, topping the Western Conference. The team boasts solid defense, conceding only 74.6 points per game, second-best in the league behind the Sun. But offensively, they’ve struggled recently, averaging just 70 points in their last three contests.

Collier is the Lynx’s cornerstone, averaging 20 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 1.5 blocks, placing her in the top 10 in all four categories league-wide. McBride contributes 15.7 points and 3.7 assists, while Alyssa Thomas averages 12.1 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Courtney Williams adds 10 points and 5.3 assists, complemented by the depth provided by Karlie Samuelson, Jazmine Jones, Zandalasini, Hiedeman, and Miller, among others. The Lynx possess one of the league’s strongest benches.

The Mystics have had a disappointing campaign, spending much of the season at the bottom of the standings. With a 5-16 record, they sit second-last in the league. They average 79.2 points (third-worst) and allow 83.5 points per game (seventh-worst). However, there has been a slight improvement since their initial 12-game losing streak, winning five of their last nine outings.

Atkins leads the Mystics’ scoring with 14.5 points per game, supported by Atkins, Sykes, and Dolson who also contribute double-digit averages. Samuelson, Edwards, Allen, Vandersloot, and Cambage all score over 7 points each. The Mystics lack a dominant scorer but have a spread-out offensive attack, which has contributed to their recent resurgence. However, Austin, Sykes, and Samuelson are out for this match, while Dolson is listed as questionable.

In their preseason encounter, the Lynx triumphed 83-77, and in their last ten meetings, both teams have won five games apiece. On paper, the Lynx hold a clear advantage, boasting a home record of 9-2. Facing the Mystics, they’ll be aiming for a victory to end their losing skid. Nevertheless, Collier’s uncertain status introduces an element of unpredictability into the contest.
