On October 31, the Executive Committee of the 10th National Members’ Congress of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) held a meeting in Beijing. The meeting approved Yao Ming’s application to resign as chairman of the CBA and elected Guo Zhenming as the new chairman.

The 10th term of the CBA has about two years left. Yao Ming resigned midway through his term, and according to the succession order, Guo Zhenming took over. This means that Guo Zhenming will serve as the head of the 10th CBA for at least two years. I suggest everyone pay close attention to how this new head will innovate in youth basketball training.
Guo Zhenming is a political work-type official from the General Administration of Sport. In his early career, he worked in the Secretariat of the General Administration of Sport, directly serving the leadership. After 2010, he was transferred to the Youth and Sports Department of the General Administration, where he served as director of various divisions such as the Training Division and the Education Division. During this period, he worked with Wang Xuan, who had been transferred from the Basketball Management Center to serve as deputy director of the Youth and Sports Department. Guo Zhenming has a very systematic and scientific understanding of sports training, particularly in the cultivation of high-level sports talent.
In 2015, Guo Zhenming was transferred to the Gymnastics Management Center and was promoted to deputy director, a sub-departmental level position. Given that gymnasts are generally young, his work at the Gymnastics Management Center undoubtedly relied heavily on the success of youth training programs. At the Tokyo Olympics, the Chinese gymnastics team won 4 golds, 5 silvers, and 2 bronzes, reversing the poor performance seen during the Rio Olympic cycle.
At the beginning of 2022, perhaps due to the excellent performance of the Chinese gymnastics team at the Tokyo Olympics, Guo Zhenming was transferred to the CBA to serve as the joint party secretary of the Basketball Management Center and the CBA, advancing to the rank of full departmental level. He was subsequently elected as VP (Vice President) in the 10th CBA, ranking first among the five VPs. Now, with Yao Ming resigning halfway through his second term, Guo Zhenming has taken over the position.
In his inaugural address, Guo Zhenming humbly stated that while his personal abilities are limited, the collective strength of all CBA members can demonstrate institutional advantages. When discussing his governance philosophy, he emphasized youth basketball. “A broad mass base and a solid talent base will be the support for our future work. On one hand, we need to ensure that children who love basketball can enjoy the sport; on the other hand, we must also help talented and gifted children grow and eventually bring glory to the country.” Therefore, during his two-year term, it will be worth observing the explorations and innovations Guo Zhenming will undertake in youth basketball training.
