On June 15, the Washington Mystics host the Chicago Sky in a WNBA regular-season contest.
The Mystics have had a disastrous season so far, losing their first 12 games. However, they secured their first win in an away game against the Dream. Currently sitting at 1-12, at the bottom of the league standings, the victory might have lifted their spirits. In that win, returning player Sims scored 18 points, Atkins also contributed 18, and the team drained 17 three-pointers to secure the triumph.
Last game’s win is crucial for the Mystics’ morale and could help them shed any lingering doubts. With their form showing signs of improvement, they have a chance to build on this momentum at home. If they can maintain their hot shooting from the previous game (31-17 from three), an upset is possible. Despite averaging just 75.6 points per game (last in the league), the Mystics might find more offensive success against the Sky’s porous defense.
The Sky, with a record of 4-7, have been inconsistent, winning only once in their last five outings. They defeated the Mystics in their last meeting but fell short against the top-ranked Sun in their most recent game. Sky’s Reese had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, though the team’s outside shooting was cold, hitting only six threes. The Sky’s offense and defense have both been underwhelming this season, averaging 4.5 made threes per game with a subpar shooting percentage and conceding 80 points defensively, ranking in the lower tier of the league. Their strong rebounding, however, could give them an edge against the Mystics’ weaker boards, potentially ending their two-game losing streak.
This will be the second encounter between the teams this season, with the Mystics losing 71-79 in the first meeting. Now, they have a chance to avenge that defeat, contingent upon maintaining their three-point shooting prowess.
