On July 21, in a U.S. men’s basketball warm-up game, what was expected to be an easy match against the relatively weaker South Sudan turned out to be quite thrilling. Thankfully, James’ driving layup in the final moments secured a 101-100 victory for the team.
In this game, South Sudan performed remarkably well, playing confidently and heating up from beyond the arc, leading the U.S. men’s team by as many as 16 points at one point. The U.S. team made a comeback in the second half, but South Sudan still had a chance to win with a three-pointer by Thor late in the game. Unfortunately, they couldn’t stop James’ drive to the basket, and Jones’ last-second heave failed, resulting in a one-point loss.
The U.S. men’s team won this game by a hair, but James was on fire, shooting 9-for-13 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, finishing with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. In the closing seconds, trailing by one point, James opted not to pass but took matters into his own hands, driving to the basket for the go-ahead layup, effectively sealing the deal. Clearly, when it comes down to the wire, James is still very dependable.
