On September 29, according to notable reporter Chris Haynes, the New York Knicks officially announced that they have waived Marcus Morris and Chuma Okeke.
The Knicks had previously signed Morris to an Exhibit 9 contract. Last season, Morris played a total of 49 games for the 76ers and Cavaliers, averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game.
Chuma Okeke, the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 draft, had signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Knicks. Last season, he averaged 6.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
According to Knicks beat reporter Fred Katz, the Knicks must create roster space to complete the trade for Towns. Waiving Morris and Okeke frees up two spots on the roster, allowing the team to sign Jeffries and other players before trading them to the Hornets.
