Recently, Shaquille O’Neal, also known as the Big Shark, talked about his experience playing with Kobe, saying that he would motivate Kobe by annoying him.
O’Neal stated that he often mentioned players like Michael Jordan and LeBron James to infuriate Kobe.
O’Neal said, “I used to deliberately say things that would make him angry because I knew it was when he would play at his best. I would tell him, ‘You’re not Michael Jordan,’ or, ‘There’s a kid named LeBron James in Cleveland who is better than you.'”
This strategy of making Kobe angry to bring out his best performance seemed very successful, after all, they won numerous honors as partners.
Kobe and O’Neal are one of the most successful duos in NBA history. The two fought together from the 1996-97 season to the 2003-04 season in the Lakers, entering the Western Conference Finals five times and the NBA Finals four times. In these eight seasons, the Lakers won fifty or more regular-season games seven times. From 2000 to 2002, O’Neal, Kobe, and the Lakers won three consecutive championships. Only a few teams in NBA history have ever won three consecutive championships, and no team has achieved this feat since the Lakers.
