On October 5th, the second stage of the CBA pre-season matches concludes with Qingdao Guoxin Pharmaceutical facing off against Shanghai Jiushi.
The Qingdao men’s basketball team performed well last season, achieving a record of 31 wins and 21 losses. Unfortunately, they couldn’t maintain their momentum in the first round of the playoffs, losing 0-2 to Guangzhou. During this off-season, Qingdao made minimal changes, mainly seeing the departure of Qu Junxuan and the addition of Jia Cheng. On the foreign player front, the team retained Powell and brought in Mitchell and Gibson. However, the new additions have yet to demonstrate their full potential based on previous performances.
In previous pre-season games, Qingdao secured two wins and three losses. Thankfully, in their last match against Jiangsu, they claimed victory with a score of 79-75. Judging from the score, both teams had low offensive efficiency. Four players from Qingdao scored in double digits, with Duan Angjun scoring 24 points and 6 assists, Mitchell contributing 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Yang Hanshen adding 7 points and 9 rebounds. Powell only warmed up, playing for five minutes without scoring. It is expected that he will play more in this game against Shanghai.
Shanghai also made adjustments during the summer. There weren’t many changes to the domestic players, retaining key players like Wang Zhelin and Liu Zheng. The foreign player lineup saw significant changes, with Bacon, Bledsoe, and Feng Lei being replaced by Waters and Wilson. They were originally going to bring in Blackney but had to change plans due to unforeseen circumstances, subsequently adding Billy Baron and Egbernu, though these two haven’t been registered yet and haven’t played for the team.
In the pre-season matches, Shanghai achieved a record of three wins and two losses. Unfortunately, they narrowly lost their last game to Beikong, falling 91-95. In this game, Wang Zhelin scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds, Waters added 23 points and four assists, while Wilson contributed 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Shanghai’s overall performance was good, but they couldn’t stop Beikong’s foreign player Riley, who scored 33 points. Facing Qingdao, Shanghai has a considerable advantage and is expected to give it their all to finish the pre-season with a win.
This is the final pre-season game, and neither team will put on too much of a show. However, the matchup between national team centers Yang Hanshen and Wang Zhelin will be a highlight. Shanghai’s foreign players still hold the upper hand, and once Waters and Wilson get into rhythm, it will be difficult for Qingdao to contain them.
