September 13 news, the 2024-25 season was originally supposed to be AJ Griffin’s third season in the NBA, but according to reports, he may end his career.
Earlier, renowned sports journalist Shams Charania disclosed on his social media account that Houston Rockets forward AJ Griffin “is seriously considering retirement,” and both sides are preparing for him to step away from the game.
AJ Griffin was selected 16th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2022 draft and was traded to the Rockets during this summer’s off-season.
His performance in his rookie season was also quite steady, averaging 8.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, with a field goal percentage of 46.5% and a three-point shooting percentage of 39%; he started 12 out of 72 games.
However, in his second season, Griffin’s role was significantly reduced, appearing in only 20 games with an average of 2.4 points and 0.9 rebounds per game.
This summer, he was traded to Houston in a three-team trade involving Atlanta and the Miami Heat. The Rockets hoped he could join young core players such as Alperen Şengün, Jalen Green, Reed Sheppard, and Jabari Smith Jr. to carry the team’s future. When defensive players focus on Şengün, Smith, and Green, Griffin’s shooting can create more space.
Now it seems these plans of the Rockets will fall through.
