Shen Zijie: Beikong’s Transformation Last Season Attracted Me; I Will Use My Strengths to Help Elevate the Team’s Defense

On July 16, Shen Zijie arrived in Beijing to report to his new team, Beikong, and took part in a media interview where he discussed various aspects of joining Beikong.

How do you feel about coming to Beikong?

Shen Zijie: It feels quite special. This is my first transfer. I went to Shenzhen at a very young age, and this is my first time leaving the south for the north. I am very grateful to the leaders of the Beikong Group and Coach Min for their trust in me, allowing me to join the Beikong family. I am also very happy.

Why did you choose Beikong?

Shen Zijie: We were opponents in last year’s playoffs. Beikong’s transformation last season left a deep impression on many people. Under the leadership of Coach Min, they set many historic records for the team. That was one of the things that attracted me. I hope to improve myself under the guidance of Coach Min.

What are your feelings about turning from opponents into teammates with your good friend Zou Yuchen?

Shen Zijie: It feels a bit subtle. I’m familiar with most of the players at Beikong, aside from Zou Yuchen. The first person I actually got to know was Meng Zikai; we met when we were on the national youth team. There was a minor conflict during last year’s league, but we’ve known each other for a long time, and we’re all friends. Because everyone is familiar with each other, integrating into the team might be faster.

As a two-time CBA Best Defensive Player, what are your expectations for coming to Beikong?

Shen Zijie: Since Beikong chose me, they hope that I can better assist the team with my defense. I also hope to use my strengths to help the team, such as my defensive coverage and strong defensive delays, to elevate the team’s defense to another level.

Did you have any communication with Coach Min before coming?

Shen Zijie: We did have some communication before I came. Coach Min went to America this year, so we didn’t get to meet today. After Coach Min returns, we will have a deeper exchange and discussion.
