On September 16, a strong matchup in the WNBA regular season saw the league-leading Liberty lose 79-88 at home to the Lynx, ending their five-game winning streak.
In this game, the Lynx quickly got into their rhythm and established a lead early on, taking a 13-point lead by the end of the first quarter. They maintained control of the game thereafter, not giving the Liberty many chances to fight back. By the end of the third quarter, they had extended their lead to 24 points. With such a significant lead, the Lynx did relax a bit, while the Liberty kept chipping away at the deficit to avoid a lopsided loss.
Stewart of the Liberty gave it her all but could not prevent the team from losing. She played for 36 minutes, shooting 12 for 27, scoring 38 points and grabbing 18 rebounds for a big double-double. Unfortunately, she did not receive enough support; Jonquel Jones had a cold hand, shooting 4 for 21, including 2 for 12 from three-point range, contributing 13 points and 8 assists. She and Stewart were the only two players to score in double digits for the team.
With another loss to the Lynx, the Liberty’s record against the Lynx this season stands at one win and three losses, including a loss in the President’s Cup final. Currently, the two teams are ranked first and second in the league. If they want to meet again, it would have to be in the Finals. We’ll see if both teams can make it to the Finals.
