Storm vs. Wings Preview: Storm Aims for Home Win Streak, Can Wings Pull Another Upset?

On the morning of June 30th, the Seattle Storm hosts the Dallas Wings in a WNBA regular-season match. The Wings, coming off an upset victory over the Western Conference-leading Lynx, will look to carry their momentum and give the Storm a tough challenge.

The Storm has strengthened its roster this season with the acquisition of Ogwumike and Diggins-Smith, forming a triumvirate alongside Loyd. This upgrade has seen the team’s performance soar, currently holding a 11-6 record and ranking fourth in the league. The Storm boasts both solid offense (averaging 82.8 points per game, 4th in the league) and defense (allowing 78.5 points, also 4th), with no significant weaknesses on either end.

Loyd leads the Storm in scoring with 19.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, having recently dropped 34 points against the Fever. Ogwumike averages 17.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Diggins-Smith contributes 14.4 points and 6.2 assists. Magbegor adds 13.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks, with her block average second in the league. Together, these four contribute 64.7 points per game, forming a formidable quartet. Houston, Whitcomb, Vivians, and others provide additional support.

The Wings have faced injury issues this season, with Sabally out and Howard missing several games before recently returning. Sigrid’s subsequent injury further impacted the team’s record, which stands at 4-13, placing them third from last. Their win over the Lynx ended an 11-game losing streak. Despite their offensive ranking 7th, their defense is 2nd from the bottom, conceding an average of 87.1 points per game.

Ogunbowale is the team’s star, averaging 23.9 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds, ranking second in the league in scoring. Howard, back from injury, averages 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds. Sigrid, McCowan, and Bilings also score in double digits. In her season debut, Sims scored 18 points as a surprise contributor in the last game.

In their previous meeting this season, the Storm defeated the Wings 92-84 at home, with their trio scoring 57 points combined while Ogunbowale had a 24-point outing. Heading into this contest, the Wings remain depleted without Sabally, Sigrid, and Jelena Brown, while the Storm is at full strength with no reported injuries. Although the Storm holds the advantage on paper and enjoys home-court advantage, they cannot underestimate a Wings team that just upset the Lynx.
