The Big Trade Sending Towns to New York Has Not Yet Been Officially Completed; Both the Timberwolves and Knicks Are Still in Negotiations

The big trade between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the New York Knicks has not yet been officially completed.

On Friday, local time, the Timberwolves sent Karl-Anthony Towns to New York in exchange for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. However, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, this trade “is still ongoing but not yet completed.” The deal also involves a first-round pick being sent from the Detroit Pistons to the Timberwolves, while the Charlotte Hornets received DaQuan Jeffries and “draft compensation.”

Although the trade has not yet been officially completed, it is expected to go through, currently mainly affecting the media appearances of traded players before training camp. The Knicks significantly strengthened their center position through this trade. Previously, their current starting center Mitchell Robinson will be out for several months at the start of the 2024-25 season due to injury, and backup Isaiah Hartenstein has also left the team.

Towns played 62 games for the Timberwolves in the 2023-24 season, averaging 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game, and he is also a four-time All-Star. Randle will play an important role in Minnesota and is expected to form a formidable core with Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. He played 46 games for the Knicks in the 2023-24 season, averaging 24 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.

Once this trade is officially completed, it should benefit both teams, although finalization will require a bit more waiting.
