On June 16, the WNBA regular season continues with the Dallas Wings hosting the Connecticut Sun.
The Dallas Wings have had a disappointing season so far, currently holding a record of 3 wins and 8 losses, placing them second from the bottom in the league. After a decent start with a 3-2 record, the Wings have now lost six straight games, displaying a lackluster performance. In their last game against the Storm, despite Ogwumike’s 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists, and McCowan’s double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, the team failed to defend effectively, allowing the Storm to score 92 points.
The Wings’ position at the bottom is mainly due to their porous defense, conceding an average of 86 points per game, ranking among the worst in the league. At home, it gets even worse, as they allow almost 90 points on average. However, there are some positives for the Wings, including their strong rebounding and an average of 5.6 blocks per game. Ogwumike has been their standout player with 26.2 points per game, but for a potential upset, more players need to step up, or they risk extending their losing streak to seven games.
The Sun, on the other hand, have had a much more successful campaign, starting with a 9-game winning streak. Following a loss to the Liberty, they bounced back with consecutive victories over the Fever and Sky, improving their record to 11 wins and 1 loss, topping the league standings. Against the Sky, Thomas put up 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Jones contributed 18 points and Bonner added 16 points and 8 boards. Despite their poor three-point shooting (3 out of 14), each player made significant contributions. The Sun’s strength lies more in their defense, allowing just 71.1 points per game, among the best in the league. They rely on attacking the paint to draw fouls, though their rebounding has been a weak spot – something the Wings could exploit with their impressive rebounding abilities. If Dallas can capitalize on this opportunity, they might just pull off an upset.
