Yao Ming: Rural Children Are Now Addicted to Smartphones and Seldom Engage in Outdoor Activities; Some Lack Basic Physical Abilities Compared to Urban Children

On September 10, Yao Ming, the current chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, recently participated in the program “Skyline Speech,” where he shared some of his observations from his time volunteering as a teacher in rural areas.

Yao Ming also expressed concern about the physical fitness of Chinese youth: “In recent years, the proliferation of smart devices and smartphones has far exceeded our expectations. We have noticed that smartphone addiction among rural youth, especially left-behind children, has impacted their healthy development. The stereotype of rural children running in the fields, climbing mountains, and playing by rivers no longer exists. We have even observed that many rural children seldom engage in outdoor activities. Some basic physical abilities, such as speed, endurance, and strength, are not better than those of urban children, while coordination, flexibility, and balance may be worse.”
