Ryan Garcia: One-Year Ban, No Decision

Ryan Garcia suspension announcement

Today, the New York State Athletic Commission ruled that former WBC Lightweight Interim Champion Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO) has been suspended for one year after testing positive for the banned substance Ostarin following his April 21 fight against current WBC Super lightweight champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KO). The bout has been declared a no contest, preserving Haney’s undefeated record, and Garcia is ordered to pay a $1.2 million fine to Golden Boy Promotions.

In a social media post, Garcia said, “As far as I know, boxing is deeply corrupt. Although I continue to train, my spirit is wounded. I am a talented fighter who delivers exciting fights and knocks out opponents. I am officially retiring from the sport.”

The 25-year-old Garcia had also exceeded the weight limit by 3.4 pounds before the match, adding to the controversy surrounding his victory, which exposed Haney’s lack of power and durability at the 140-pound division. Despite his grinding ability, it seems unlikely for him to succeed at higher weights.
