Stevenson: One-Year Ban for Ryan Garcia Isn't Enough

Recently, American WBC lightweight and three-division world champion Shane Stevenson (21-0, 10 KO) expressed to the media that a one-year suspension for “Flash” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO) is insufficient and does not serve as a deterrent. He stated:

“A one-year ban for Ryan Garcia is unfair. With two positive tests for Ostarin, such a lenient punishment won’t deter others. Other fighters might think it’s acceptable to get away with a year if they use banned substances. Personally, I believe it’s unjust, and we’ll see more violations in the future.”

Stevenson continued, “I’m open to fighting anyone, there are plenty of big fights on the horizon, like against Davis, Williams-Sepeda, or Isaac Cruz. The key is that these opponents are willing to step up, and if it means maximizing earnings, I’m even open to moving up to 140 pounds.”

The 26-year-old Stevenson boasts an unblemished professional record of 21 wins, 10 by knockout, and is currently ranked No. 2 at 135 pounds on the BOXREC, trailing only “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KO) in the rankings. Stevenson is set to defend his WBC 135-pound title on July 6 against Armenian-German Artem Harutyunyan (12-1, 7 KO), marking his first title defense.
