Today, current IBF Welterweight Champion, American “Boots” Galon Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs), told the media that he hopes to challenge three-weight world champion Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs). Ennis knocked out David Avanesyan (30-5-1, 18 KOs) in five rounds yesterday, making a strong start to 2024.
Galon Ennis said: “Crawford should sign the fight. If he wants to fight me, he will definitely stay at 147 lbs, but he says he’s moving up to 154 lbs to unify the super welterweight division. I don’t care who I fight, I just want to fight top-level fighters; they’ll bring out the best in me. When you meet a fighter as sharp as you, you can only get better. I believe I’m going to be a legend in boxing. Although it’s been a year since I’ve fought, I feel like there are still plenty of weapons in my arsenal. I can prove myself by fighting top-level fighters.”
Regarding David Avanesyan, Ennis said: “He moved more than I expected. I thought he would come forward and engage in a fierce battle. At first, I didn’t have my timing right, but I will certainly perform better in my next fight. I knew I could KO Avanesyan, it was just a matter of time. When I returned to the corner between rounds, my coaching team told me to relax and not chase him around the ring. Rounds four and five were comfortable for me, and I landed a solid punch in the fifth round.”
Although Galon Ennis has the skills, his box-office draw is currently limited and he is not Crawford’s target. Crawford is already 36 years old and retirement isn’t far off. At this stage, he only wants fights that will make him money and doesn’t want to choose young prospects.
