In a super flyweight bout that concluded yesterday, former four-division world champion and Nicaraguan boxing legend “Chocolatito” Roman Gonzalez (52-4, 42 KOs) scored a 10th-round TKO victory over Colombian Roberto Barrera (27-6, 17 KOs), marking a successful return to the ring.
The fight took place in Managua, Nicaragua. Gonzalez’s last bout was in December 2022, where he lost his trilogy match against Juan Francisco Estrada (44-4, 28 KOs), leaving him out of action for a year and a half. However, Barrera, who is of average skill, posed little threat to Gonzalez. In the closing moments of the 8th round, Gonzalez landed an abdominal punch that resulted in the first knockdown of Barrera. The 9th round saw Barrera hit the canvas again, but he managed to survive until the end of the round. By the 10th round, Gonzalez’s heavy punches were consistently landing, prompting the referee to stop the contest.
With this victory, 37-year-old Roman Gonzalez improves his professional record to 52 wins, 4 losses, with 42 wins coming by way of knockout. Gonzalez was once THE RING magazine’s pound-for-pound king, possessing power, speed, and technical skills. However, since moving up to the 115-pound weight class, his size has been somewhat of a disadvantage.
