U.S. lightweight prospect Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) assured the media today that he would defeat current WBA lightweight champion and three-division world titlist Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) over 12 rounds due to Davis’s lack of proficiency in point-scoring fights.
Said Martin, “Davis better not be reckless. If he wants to go toe-to-toe, I’ll knock him out. You’ve seen in Davis’s previous fights that he’s not good at fighting the distance, getting outscored on points. Even though he knocked out Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) in his last bout, Garcia was ahead on points. I’m ready to go the full 12 rounds with Davis. You have to be extremely cautious against him, always keeping your eyes wide open. Eighty percent of boxing is mental, 20 percent physical, and Davis is just skilled at psychological warfare. I’m prepared for that.”
The 29-year-old Frank Martin was once considered one of the most promising prospects in the lightweight division, but his less-than-impressive victory over Argenis Hernandez (12-1, 7 KOs) in July left fans underwhelmed. Currently, the odds are 1-5 in favor of Davis.
