In a surprising upset in today’s junior welterweight championship bout, Australian newcomer Lyan Parrucho (25-0, 15 KOs) defeated defending IBF junior welterweight titleholder Gabriel Matias (20-2, 20 KOs) in his hometown over 12 rounds by unanimous decision, becoming the new IBF 140-pound world champion.
Heading into the fight, odds were as high as 1-7 in favor of the hometown favorite and reigning champion, Matias. However, Matias may have underestimated Parrucho and was slow to start. Despite lacking significant power, Parrucho fought aggressively and had an edge in scoring. In the sixth round, Matias showed some strength, momentarily unsettling Parrucho. In the seventh, Parrucho was penalized a point. But afterward, Matias failed to capitalize on his strength advantage and delivered an underwhelming performance. Ultimately, both fighters went the full 12 rounds, with three judges scoring the bout 115-112, 115-112, and 116-111 in favor of the visiting Parrucho.
With this victory, the 28-year-old Parrucho improves his professional record to 25 wins, with 15 of those coming by way of knockout. Standing at 1.74 meters tall with a reach of 1.80 meters, Parrucho fights from the left-handed stance and previously held the titles of IBF International and WBO Global champion. This triumph is undoubtedly the biggest of his career so far.
