Atlas: Benavidez Shouldn't Fight Morel

Recently, American boxing trainer Teddy Atlas told the media that current WBC super middleweight/light heavyweight interim champion David Benavídez (29-0, 24 KOs) should avoid facing Cuban powerhouse David Morrell Jr. (10-0, 9 KOs). Morrell has now moved up to the light heavyweight division and is set to compete for the vacant WBA regular light heavyweight title on August 3.

Said Atlas, “I know people might not like my opinion. A boxer should have the ambition to take on any challenge, but his manager must be protective. If I were David Benavídez’s manager, I wouldn’t allow him to fight David Morrell; he’s too dangerous. I’m not saying Benavídez can’t beat Morrell, but the risk-reward ratio isn’t right.”

The 27-year-old Benavídez has consistently rejected Morrell’s challenges in recent years, well aware of the threat he poses. Benavídez is now planning to return to the super middleweight division, with an aim to challenge for the WBC super middleweight championship belt, which Canelo Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) might vacate in the near future.
