This morning, former WBO interim heavyweight champion Zhang Zhilei (27-2-1, 22 KOs) lived up to expectations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, brutally knocking out former WBC heavyweight titlist Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) in the fifth round, securing a significant victory.
In the fifth round, Zhang caught Wilder with a right hand counter, causing Wilder to turn away and try to evade the blow. Zhang followed up with a fatal right hand, ending the fight. Here are the post-fight punch statistics for both boxers:
Boxer
Punches Landed/Punches Thrown
Jab Connections/Punches Thrown
Power Punch Connections/Punches Thrown
Wilder
16/95 (16.8%)
5/53 (9.4%)
11/42 (26.2%)
Zhang Zhilei
33/73 (45.2%)
4/16 (25%)
29/57 (50.9%)
According to the punch data, although Wilder threw more punches, his landed punches were fewer in comparison. Zhang Zhilei landed over twice as many punches as Wilder, particularly landing 29 power punches compared to Wilder’s 11. Wilder’s jabbing strategy seemed ineffective, failing to control the pace. Zhang was accurate today, demonstrating solid preparation.
With this win, Zhang Zhilei’s career has taken another turn, and a rematch with Joseph Parker (35-3, 23 KOs) later this year is not out of the question.
