Recently, former WBC/WBA Super/IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) told the media that although unified lightweight titlist Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is undoubtedly skilled, he is not in the same league as five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0, 27 KOs).
According to Spence, “Crawford is not on Mayweather’s level at all. Mayweather is a special fighter, and I’m certain he’s superior to Crawford. I don’t know how close Mayweather is to being considered one of the greatest boxers of all time, but he might be very near.”
Crawford is set to move up to super welterweight on August 3 to challenge WBA champion Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) for his title, marking Crawford’s quest for a fourth world championship in a different weight class. Talks are ongoing in the Middle East to stage a mega-fight between Álvarez and Crawford, although Álvarez is still considering either Benavídez or Crawford for his next opponent.
Additionally, it has been reported that Mayweather Promotions’ CEO position has now been taken over by Richard Schaefer, the former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. The previous CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, has stepped down from his role. Schaefer, who was once a highly influential boxing manager over a decade ago, co-founded Golden Boy alongside Oscar De La Hoya and enjoyed great success until he moved all of Golden Boy’s star fighters to Al Haymon’s PBC. Mayweather has always admired Schaefer’s business acumen.
