Bob Arum, promoter of current IBF lightweight champion and three-division world titlist Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs), told the media today that he might initiate negotiations for a showdown between Lomachenko and Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) as early as this week. The proposed bout is tentatively scheduled for November.
The 92-year-old Arum commented, “Davis had a good performance against Frank Martin (18-1, 12 KOs), who is a talented young fighter with power, but Davis hasn’t faced a top-level opponent yet. Lomachenko is willing to fight Davis. Once we sit down, we’ll see if we can make it happen – Lomachenko is keen on it. Davis has now become a box-office star, and a Lomachenko-Davis bout would generate more revenue than Lomachenko vs. Shakur Stevenson. Anything is possible at this point.”
The 36-year-old Lomachenko recently scored a TKO victory over former three-division champion George Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs) in May, capturing the vacant IBF lightweight title. From that fight, it’s evident that Lomachenko’s form is still excellent, defying his age. However, Davis, with his combination of power, skill, and speed, is currently in his prime, making a win for Lomachenko a challenging task.
