Recently, former world heavyweight champion James “Buster” Douglas (38-6-1, 25 KOs) told the media that current two-division world champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) has a significant chance of defeating Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs), as Tyson’s opponents back then were not skilled at evading punches and were more vulnerable to getting hit.
James Douglas said, “I dare say that Usyk would have the best chance of defeating Mike Tyson in today’s boxing scene, followed by Anthony Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs). Tyson was a tough opponent, but his previous opponents were more susceptible to getting hit until he faced me. Actually, Anthony Joshua isn’t too different from Tyson’s earlier opponents, so he wouldn’t pose a significant threat to Tyson either.”
In 1990, Douglas pulled off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history when he defeated Tyson in Tokyo. At that time, the odds were as high as 1-42 against Douglas. Prior to their bout, Tyson had an undefeated record and a high knockout percentage, but Douglas shattered the myth of Tyson’s invincibility.
