Recently, WBC lightweight champion and three-division world titleholder Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) told the media that Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, is being dishonest by claiming he should only re-sign with his company. Stevenson, no longer a teenager, says he won’t be easily swayed by Arum’s words.
Stevenson stated, “Arum says I have no other choice but Top Rank and tells me to look at the market and come back. Arum isn’t really running the show; he should just shut up. I don’t know what decision I’ll make; anything is possible – it’s business. Top Rank and I agree on one thing: if there’s money to be made, we’ll continue working together. I know my worth. I’m not that 19-year-old who just finished Olympic boxing; I’m an adult now, and in the coming years, I’ll be one of the best legends in the sport.”
The 27-year-old Stevenson is set to return to the ring this Sunday against Armenian-German Harutyunyan (12-1, 7 KOs). Stevenson has been eager to face Vasyl Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, but Arum has been unable to convince these fighters to accept Stevenson’s challenge. For Stevenson, aligning with Al Haymon’s PBC might present more significant fight opportunities.
