Former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew (30-3-1, 20 KOs) recently told the media that he doesn’t advise Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) to drop back down to cruiserweight for a rematch with Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs), given his body has adapted to the heavyweight division.
“I’ve spoken to Usyk about this before and I told him it wouldn’t be in his best interest to go back to cruiserweight because he’s been at heavyweight for a while now and his body has adjusted,” Tony Bellew said. “Usyk believes he can make cruiserweight without any issues, but it’s not that simple – his body might not allow it anymore. I believe he’ll change his mind when the time comes. Right now, nobody can beat Usyk, and honestly, I’d like to see him retire with an undefeated record.”
Usyk is set for a rematch with Fury on December 21, and it’s likely he’ll return to cruiserweight afterward. Usyk has mentioned that he has been overeating to maintain his heavyweight weight, and cruiserweight is his natural fighting weight. Besides, should Beterbiev or Bivol, the winner of their upcoming fight, move up to cruiserweight, there would be significant earnings for Usyk.
